Level: Case Study
Within the last year, design tools for developing OWL ontologies have moved from university prototypes to commercial products. This demonstration will walk you through the use of a new commercial product from DATA-GRID. It allows you to build a graphical diagram of the classes in an ontology and the relationships between these classes. Once the class diagram has been built, the programmer can click on the rectangle representing a class and drop into a text editor to fill in the other properties of the class declaration. From there, the tool can be used to automatically generate:
- Java or C# class definitions, or class definitions for the newer dynamic object scripting languages Ruby, Python, Javascript 2.0.
- Metadata for the DATA-GRID OWL DBMS
- Metadata for an object-to-relational mapping layer that allows instances of the OWL/Ruby classes to be stored in a traditional relational DBMS.
The tool is implemented as an eclipse plug-in, so that programmers familiar with that IDE will not have to learn the UI conventions of a separate stand-alone tool. The demonstration will walk through the creation of a schema for a Ruby on Rails implementation of a database-driven web site, showing how it handles changes in the schema as the designer works out the conceptual model for the application.
