Level: Case Study

With Time Inc. Interactive's development and successful deployment of a proprietary Semantic Web framework on several of Time Inc.'s websites, we take the leap and attempt to migrate a very large, complex relational database into a semantically-meaningful one. Some of the challenges we faced were:

  • Accommodating new website functionality
  • Structuring the data for reuse with other sites
  • Scaling to adapt to a large, complex set of RDF triples

The advantages and disadvantages of the old system vs. the new are outlined as well as a discussion on how successful the outcome was, and what challenges still lie ahead. This presentation will take the participants through the journey of migration, from initial planning stages where business rules are established, to the succession of migrations and their outcomes, as well as how the data interacts with site functionality.

Barbara McGlamery has developed several ontologies for Time, Inc.’s web products, including AOL Home, RealSimple.com, InStyle.com, People. com, and EW.com.
