Libraries were always a source of organized knowledge for various application areas, e.g., teaching. Digital libraries deliver similar services in a digital context, e.g., e-learning. Systems like JeromeDL, which adapts semantic web and social networking technologies to knowledge organization systems in digital libraries domain, are the corner stones of the future Internet. They not only deliver high quality knowledge, but also provide wide range of search and browsing services, together with others, which are based on social interactions. JeromeDL can turn a humble reader of digital content into a knowledge contributor, knowledge that can be used by other users, not only of this particular digital library. We will present:

  • How semantic web and social networking techniques can help to improve services of a digital libraries
  • JeromeDL, an example digital library system that implements the presented research
  • A number of services delivered in this digital library
  • How JeromeDL can support future solutions in e-learning, web archiving and government

Sebastian Ryszard Kruk - Researcher in DERI, National University of Ireland, Galway, Ireland; affiliated with Gdansk University of Technology, Poland under Corrib.org cluster project Project leader of the Corrib.org cluster project; director of the Semantic Infrastructure Lab in the eLearning Cluster. His main area of interest covers the Semantic Web, digital libraries, information retrieval, security and distributed computing. Together with Henryk Krawczyk he came up with an idea for the semantic digital library which was implemented first at GUT as Elvis-DL. At the moment he continues working on this system under the JeromeDL project. He has initiated work on MarcOnt Initiative and FOAFRealm project. He contributes to the Open Source community with a number of other projects.

Stefan Decker is professor and director of the Digital Enterprise Research Institute, a leading a research institute employing 70 people. His current research interests include the Semantic Web, metadata, ontologies and semi-structured data, web services, and applications for Digital Libraries, Knowledge Management, Information Integration and Peer-to-Peer technology. He has published around 70 papers in books and journals, and as book, conference, and workshop contributions. He co-organized around 35 scientific workshops and conferences and has edited several special issues of scientific journals. His dissertation work was quoted as one of the inspirations for the DARPA DAML program, which spans the Semantic Web effort.
