Peeling Away Semantic Layers of the ONION ... without tears

Carl Mattocks
ONION Community of Practice Leader
MetLife

Monday, 5/21/2007
5:00 PM - 6:00 PM
Level: Technical - Intermediate

The session will focus on the collaboration tools and techniques that worked, or did not work so well, when a group of experts collaborated on the building of a Business of Information Technology ontology. Attendees will gain real world insights on how an open source semantic reference tool the ONION (ONtologies In ONtology) was created. In particular, they will learn the details of how it was structured using multiple, domain specific, layers. Further, how the content of each layer is scoped by the set of IT topics that are relevant to a particular Community of Interest (COI) or Community of Action (COA), including:

  • IT Service Management Best Practice e.g. ISO 20000
  • ITIL IT Control Frameworks e.g. ISACA COBIT
  • Information Security e.g. ISO / IEC 27001, ISO 17799
  • IT Auditor Control Objectives e.g. COSO
  • SOA e.g. OASIS BCM (Business Centric Methodology)

Carl Mattocks is the ONION Community of Practice Leader. Additionally, he is Application Knowledge Management Consultant at MetLife and Founder of CHECKMi, a New Jersey-based company developing agent–based software powered by domain-specific ontologies. Commencing with the ISO IRDS standard for Repositories, Carl is a long time contributor to the development and exploitation of metadata-centric specifications. Currently he acts as a chair for the OASIS Business Centric Methodology TC and the ebXML Registry Semantic Content SC. Much of Carl’s wisdom was gained managing a London–based Artificial Intelligence company that pioneered the use of faceted-classification techniques and multinational-language processing for online information discovery.
